The efficacy of gabapentin supplementation for pain control after lumbar laminectomy and discectomy: A meta-analysis study.

Five studies including 322 patients undergoing lumbar laminectomy and/or discectomy were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing gabapentin supplementation versus placebo. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain scores at 2, 4, 12, and 24 hours postoperatively, anxiety score, and incidence of nausea and vomiting. Gabapentin significantly reduced pain scores at 2, 4, and 24 hours, anxiety scores, and the incidence of vomiting, but had no significant effect on 12-hour pain scores or nausea. These findings suggest gabapentin supplementation may be an effective adjunct for improving early postoperative pain and anxiety management in this surgical population.
