One hundred twenty patients with moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive acupuncture (n=35), exercise rehabilitation (n=36), or a combination of acupuncture and exercise rehabilitation (n=39). The primary outcome was the response rate at week 4, defined as significant improvement in pain and function. Secondary outcomes included changes in pain scores (VAS), functional scores (WOMAC), stiffness, and joint mobility. Outcomes were assessed at weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12. Overall, the study revealed that the combination group had significantly higher response rates and improvements in pain relief, stiffness, and mobility compared to the single-treatment groups, with benefits sustained for at least eight weeks post-treatment. These findings suggest a synergistic effect of combining acupuncture and exercise rehabilitation for treating knee osteoarthritis.
