The effect of tranexamic acid and epinephrine on visual clarity during arthroscopic shoulder surgery: A meta-analysis of RCTs.
Orthop Traumatol Surg Res . 2024 Sep;110(5):103844.Seven randomized controlled trials, including 579 patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery, were reviewed to compare the effects of tranexamic acid (TXA) and epinephrine on visual clarity. The pooled outcomes included visual clarity, operative time, irrigation volume, mean arterial pressure, and postoperative pain. Results indicated that TXA significantly improved visual clarity compared to saline. However, epinephrine alone provided superior clarity compared to TXA. There was no significant improvement in operative time, irrigation volume, or pain scores with TXA. These findings suggest that while TXA enhances clarity, epinephrine may be more effective, and further research is warranted.
