The effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy on time to fracture healing: a meta-analysis

Six randomized controlled trials were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) in post-fracture management. Data from 3 studies on time to fracture healing was used to compare LIPUS- and placebo-treated groups through meta-analysis. The resulting effect size was statistically significant in favour of LIPUS compared to placebo. One additional study demonstrated no significant difference in time to healing between LIPUS- and placebo-treated groups following operative treatment of tibial fractures. Further high-quality evidence evaluating the use of LIPUS in fracture healing is required to better understand LIPUS’s potential effects in different patient populations.
