BMJ 2013;347: f7395.Using NHS data from 2011-2012, an assessment of the cost to the NHS of watching bone cement dry in lower limb orthopaedic procedures was performed. With an average cement drying time of 7 minutes and just over 100,000 procedures being performed annually, roughly 701,218 minutes per year are spent watching cement dry. Using average first-year salaries of an operating team, this results in approximately 1.43 million pounds per year spent by the NHS having specialists watch cement dry.
