Meta-analysis comparing total hip arthroplasty with hemiarthroplasty in the treatment of displaced neck of femur fracture

This meta-analysis and systematic review identified 3 randomized controlled trials that had adequate data and compared THA to HA as treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures. A total of 407 patients were available for analysis (THA=197, HA=210). Although the results from this analysis demonstrated that THA resulted in a reduced likelihood of undergoing revision surgery, increased mobility, less pain and decreased need for analgesia in the long term (13 years), due to the fact that pooling of data was not possible. Future studies need to be completed so that firm conclusions can be made.
