Spinal anesthesia: should everyone receive a urinary catheter?: a randomized, prospective study of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty

207 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty under spinal anesthesia were randomized to either receive an indwelling catheter (control) or not (experimental). The patients were monitored after surgery (and removal of catheter) for the development of urinary retention and/or urinary tract infection. The study revealed no significant differences between the two group and demonstrated that patients with a history of benign prostatic hypertrophy may be at an increased risk for urinary retention.
