Temporary Partial Weight-Bearing Restriction After Distal Femur Fracture .

Temporary Partial Weight-Bearing Restriction in Elderly Patients Treated With a Plate Fixation After a Distal Femur Fracture had a Negative Long-Term Impact on Gait Recovery.

Geriatr Orthop Surg Rehabil . 2023 Oct 13:14:21514593231184945.

A total of thirty-two patients with distal femur fractures were randomized to receive immediate full weight-bearing (n=9) or temporary partial weight-bearing (n=17). The primary outcome of interest was actual weight-bearing capability. Secondary outcomes of interest included gait cadence, compliance with weight-bearing restrictions, and functional recovery. Outcomes were assessed at 5 days, and at 8, 16, and 52 weeks postoperatively. Overall, the results of the study revealed that partial weight-bearing resulted in significantly reduced weight-bearing and cadence compared to full weight-bearing at multiple time points, which persisted through the 1-year follow-up. These findings suggest that temporary partial weight-bearing restrictions adversely impact long-term recovery of gains and should be carefully considered in clinical practice.
