Telerehabilitation Therapy is Non-Inferior to In-Person Therapy for Patients Who Underwent a THR .
Telerehabilitation is non-inferior to usual care following total hip replacement - a randomized controlled non-inferiority trial
Physiotherapy.2020 Jun;107:19-27.Seventy patients who had underwent a total hip replacement (THR) were randomized into receiving in-person physiotherapy and a paper-based home exercise program or the exact same therapy remotely using applications through an iPad provided. The primary outcome consisted of quality of life (QoL) subscale of the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS) at 6 weeks after surgery. The secondary outcomes included functional health which was measured using the Short Form-12 (SF-12) and health related QoL which was measured using the EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5 Level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L). Furthermore, secondary outcomes also consisted of the following: functional mobility using the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), hip strength including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, and external rotation, knee extension strength, patient-reported satisfaction, and home exercise program compliance. Results demonstrated that there were no significant differences found between the two groups for both primary and secondary outcomes, except for compliance where the telerehabilitation group reported a higher overall compliance to treatment.
