Telecare collaborative management of chronic pain in primary care: a randomized clinical trial

250 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain were randomized to evaluate the efficacy of Telecare collaborative management, as compared to usual care, with respect to relief from pain. Patients were monitored over 12 months and were evaluated primarily based on Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) score. The evidence presented in this trial indicated that Overall BPI was significantly decreased in the Telecare Group indicating reduced pain. The Telecare Group was twice as likely to report at least a 30% improvement in their pain score, and was also more likely to report global pain improvement. Opioid usage was comparable between patients of the Telecare and Usual Groups, however, Telecare patients received a greater number of analgesics for more months, and at a higher mean dose.
