Tailored Mat-Pilates Exercise Program For Older Adults With Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain .

Effects of a tailored mat-Pilates exercise program for older adults on pain, functioning, and balance in women with chronic non-specific low back pain: a randomized controlled trial.

Aging Clin Exp Res . 2023 Dec;35(12):3059-3071.

Sixty-three patients with chronic non-specific low back pain were randomized to receive either a tailored mat-Pilates program (n=32) or a home-based general exercise program (n=31). The primary outcomes of interest were pain reduction as measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Secondary outcomes of interest included the number of analgesics taken and adherence to the intervention. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 10 weeks, and 6 months post-intervention. Overall, the results of the study revealed significant improvements in pain and disability in the Pilates group compared to the control group, which persisted at 6 months. However, there were no significant improvements in balance. This suggests that mat-Pilates is effective for pain and disability reduction but not for improving balance in this population.
