343 patients with arthritis were randomized to either a tai chi therapy program or a control group. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of tai chi on symptom reduction, function, and psychological status of arthritis patients over one year. Significant improvements were displayed in balance by reach, helplessness, sleep, and role participation satisfaction for patients that participated in the tai chi therapy at the short-term 8-week follow-up. Long-term follow-up at one year reported maintained improvement in balance, helplessness, and role participation satisfaction.
