Surgical versus non-surgical treatment of flail chest: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg . 2023 Dec;49(6):2531-2541.Six randomized controlled trials (544 patients) comparing surgical versus non-surgical treatment for flail chest were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Outcomes of interest included duration of mechanical ventilation, length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), length of hospital stay, and the incidence of mortality, tracheostomy, and pneumonia. Mechanical ventilation days and the length of ICU stay were significantly shorter in the surgery group compared to the non-surgical treatment group. The incidence of pneumonia was also significantly lower in the surgery group. All other outcomes were similar between the two groups.
