Comparison between radial head replacement and open reduction and internal fixation in clinical treatment of unstable, multi-fragmented radial head fractures

45 patients with unstable, multi-fragmented radial head fractures were randomized to receive treatment based upon replacement of the radial head by metal prostheses or open reduction and internal fixation. The results of the 2-year study indicated that those individuals who received radial head replacement displayed significantly better clinical results according to Broberg and Morrey scores and lower rates of post-operative complications in comparison to individuals who received open reduction and internal fixation. Additionally, it was found that radial head replacement led to better joint kinematics in comparison to open reduction and internal fixation.
