Heterotopic ossification after surface replacement arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty: A randomized study
J Arthroplasty. 2009 Feb;24(2):256-62. Epub 2008 Apr 11200 patients eligible for this study were randomized to receive either total hip arthroplasty (THA) or surface replacement arthroplasty (SRA). These patients were assessed to determine the incidence rate and possible patient factors that might affect heterotopic ossification (HO) in these treatments. Radiographic results, assessed 1 year postoperatively, revealed a significantly greater incidence of HO in the SRA group. It was also noted that HO development was associated with a reduction in functional outcomes.
