Supervised vs Web-Based vs Self-Guided Exercise for Patellofemoral Pain in Women .
Comparative Efficacy of Supervised, Web-Based, and Self-Guided Exercise Interventions in Women with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.
Medicina (Kaunas) . 2025 Apr 15;61(4):731.Sixty women with patellofemoral pain syndrome were randomized to receive supervised exercise (SE, n=20), web-based exercise (WBE, n=20), or self-guided exercise (SGE, n=20) for six weeks. The primary outcome was the Kujala Anterior Knee Pain Scale. Secondary outcomes included pain at rest and during activity (VAS), mobility (Timed Up and Go test), and kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and six weeks. Overall, the results revealed that all groups improved significantly in all measures, with SE achieving the largest improvements, followed by WBE, and SGE the least. SE was superior to both WBE and SGE for most measures, while WBE was superior to SGE across all parameters. These findings suggest that supervised programs are most effective, but web-based delivery offers a strong alternative when in-person care is not feasible.
