Supervised Physiotherapy vs a Home Exercise Program in Patients with Distal Radius Fracture .
Effectiveness of supervised physiotherapy versus a home exercise program in patients with distal radius fracture: a randomized controlled trial with a 2-year follow-up.
Physiotherapy . 2024 Sep:124:93-100.Seventy-four patients older than 60 years with extra-articular distal radius fractures were randomized to receive six weeks of supervised physiotherapy (n=37) or a home exercise program (n=37). The primary outcome was wrist/hand function as measured by the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) questionnaire. Secondary outcomes included pain intensity (VAS), grip strength, and wrist flexion–extension range of motion. Outcomes were assessed at 6 weeks, 1 year, and 2 years post-intervention. Overall, the results revealed that supervised physiotherapy was significantly more effective at 6 weeks and 1 year for all outcomes, but only grip strength showed continued improvement at 2 years. The study suggests that supervised physiotherapy provides short- to medium-term benefits but diminished effects long term.
