The effects of supervision on the outcomes of exercise training in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: A single-blind randomized controlled trial.

Forty-five patients with ankylosing spondylitis were randomized to receive either education alone (P; n=15), education + home exercise (PT; n=15), or education + supervised exercise (PTE; n=15). The primary outcome of interest was chest expansion. Other outcomes that were assessed were the Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Activity Index (BASDAI), Metrology Index (BASMI), evaluation of AS quality of life (EASi-QoL) function, disease activity, emotional well-being, and social participation. The pTE group showed significantly better chest expansion outcomes post-treatment when compared to the PT and P groups. Similarly, ASDAS, BASDAI, BASMI, and EASi-QoL disease activity scores were significantly better in the PTE group post-treatment.
