Short-term Clinical Outcomes of Hip Arthroscopy Versus Physical Therapy in Patients With Femoroacetabular Impingement: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Three studies containing 650 patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome were included in this meta-analysis comparing hip arthroscopy and physical therapy. The outcomes of interest included the International Hip Outcome Tool–33 (iHOT-33) score, and the Hip Outcome Score (HOS)–Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Sport scores. The mean follow-up length of the included studies ranged from 8-24 months. Results of the meta-analysis revealed statistically significantly favourable pooled iHOT-33 scores in the hip arthroscopy group compared to the physical therapy group (p=0.046). Whilst pooled HOS-ADL and Sport scores in the intent-to-treat analysis were not statistically significantly different between groups (p=0.571, p=0.347; respectively), pooled HOS-ADL scores in the as-treated analysis were statistically significantly in favour of the hip arthroscopy group (p<0.001).
