Superior Clinical Outcomes With Intralesional PRP Injections vs Corticosteroids in Plantar Fasciitis .
Platelet-Rich Plasma Versus Corticosteroids for the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Am J Sports Med. 2021 Apr;49(5): 1381-1393.Study Summary
Fifteen randomized controlled trials containing a total of 811 patients with plantar fasciitis were included in this meta-analysis comparing intralesional injections of corticosteroids to platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Outcomes of interest included pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Outcomes were assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up. The results of this meta-analysis demonstrate that the pooled AOFAS score was significantly favored in the PRP group compared to corticosteroid group at 6 and 12 months follow-up (p=0.009 for both) but not at 1 to 3 months follow-up (p>0.05). Moreover, pooled VAS pain scores were significantly lower in the PRP group vs corticosteroid group at 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up (p<0.05 for all).
