Suction drainage in total knee replacement does not influence early functional outcomes or blood loss: a randomized control trial.

146 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive suction drainage post-operation (n=79) or no drainage (n=67). The primary outcome of interest was hemoglobin drop in the first 3 days post-operation. Secondary outcomes of interest included total blood loss, transfusion rate, and length of hospitalization. No differences in hemoglobin drop were observed between the two groups. Similarly, no difference in estimated blood loss or length of hospitalization was observed. 1 patient in the suction group required a transfusion.
