Forearm Fractures in Children: Split Opinions about Splitting the Cast

OE Journal. 2014;2(12):38 Eur J Pediatr Surg. 2014 Apr;24(2):163-7100 children under 16 years of age with a closed fracture of the forearm were randomly assigned into 1 of 2 treatment groups to compare the safety and fracture stability of split circumferential synthetic semi-rigid casting to closed casting 4-6 weeks after intervention. No compartment syndrome occurrences were observed in either treatment group at final follow up, but moderate skin breakdown occurred in two patients (one in each group). Secondary displacement of the fracture and fracture stability was found to be statistically similar between the treatment groups.
