The Effect of Soundproof Headphones During Orthopedic Surgery Under Spinal Anesthesia on Patients' Physiological Indices and Duration of Recovery: A Randomized, Controlled, Clinical Trial.
J Perianesth Nurs . 2024 Jun;39(3):379-385.One hundred eighty-four patients undergoing lower limb orthopedic surgery under spinal anesthesia were randomized to receive either soundproof headphones during surgery (n=92) or no headphones (n=92). The primary outcome was changes in physiological indices (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation). The secondary outcome was duration of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Outcomes were assessed at five time points: before surgery, at the end of surgery, on PACU admission, and 15 and 30 minutes post-admission. Overall, the results revealed that patients wearing soundproof headphones had more stable blood pressure and heart rate, higher oxygen saturation and respiratory rate, and a significantly shorter PACU stay compared with controls. The findings suggest that soundproof headphones may improve perioperative stability and accelerate recovery.
