Activity Increase Despite Arthritis (AIDA): phase II randomised controlled trial of an active management booklet for hip and knee osteoarthritis in primary care

Br J Gen Pract. 2011 Aug;61(589):e452-8. doi: 10.3399/bjgp11X588411

119 patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either an advice booklet on managing osteoarthritis through exercise, called "The Hip & Knee Book: Having you cope with the osteoarthritis", or receive an information booklet on osteoarthritis, to measure the efficacy of the advice booklet on motivating patients to exercise. Following assessments over a 3 month period, the results displayed that patients who read "The Hip & Knee Book" had slightly better improvements in illness, exercise, fear-avoidance beliefs, and physical activity levels compared to those who read the information booklet.
