Fracture fixation in the operative management of hip fractures (FAITH): an international, multicentre, randomised controlled trial

1108 patients with a hip fracture were randomized to fixation through either a sliding hip screw or cancellous screws. The outcomes of interest included reoperation rate and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) over a 24-month follow-up. The overall rate of reoperation for any reason did not significantly differ between groups, 20% in the sliding hip screw group and 22% for patients in the cancellous screws group. Rates of implant removal and conversion to another type of internal fixation were higher with cancellous screws, while conversion to total hip arthroplasty was higher with sliding hip screws.
