Single vs Continuous Femoral Nerve Block in Elderly TKA: Analgesia and Function .
Effects of single femoral nerve block and continuous femoral nerve block on perioperative analgesia and muscle strength in elderly patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, a randomized clinical trial.
Front Surg . 2025 Jun 16:12:1403280.Ninety-four patients with end-stage knee arthritis scheduled for primary TKA were randomized to SFNB (n=48) or CFNB (n=46). The primary outcome was 24-h postoperative VAS pain. Secondary outcomes included VAS at 2, 6, 12, 48, and 72 h; total celecoxib use; quadriceps strength (MMT) at 2–72 h; knee ROM at 24 h, 72 h, and 1 week; AKS at 1 week; complications and length of stay; and GCQ comfort at 72 h. Overall, the results revealed no between-group differences in pain or rescue analgesic use through 72 h, but SFNB produced higher quadriceps strength at 6, 12, and 24 h and better 24-h ROM, with similar adverse events and higher physiological/psychological comfort. In short, SFNB achieved non-inferior analgesia with earlier motor recovery and better comfort versus CFNB in elderly TKA
