Outcomes of Single-Stage Versus Staged Treatment of Osteochondral Lesions in Patients With Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability: A Prospective Randomized Study
Orthop J Sports Med. 2022 Feb 4;10(2): 23259671211069909.One hundred and three patients with chronic lateral ankle instability and osteochondral lesions of the talus were randomized to receive an arthroscopic microfracture surgery plus a modified Brostrom-Gould procedure at the same time (single-stage; n=52) or after 4-6 months of rehabilitation training (staged; n=51). The primary outcome of interest was the Karlsson-Peterson ankle function scale. Secondary outcomes included the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Outcomes were assessed at a minimum 24 months post-operation. Result found Karlsson-Peterson scores single-stage group to be non-inferior to staged group. Moreover, AOFAS scores were significantly in favour of the single-stage group at 12 months.
