A prospective randomized study comparing double- and single-bundle techniques for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Am J Sports Med. 2013 Nov;41(11):2484-91

103 patients, over the age of 18, with a unilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury were randomized to undergo single- or double-bundle ACL reconstruction to determine if one of these approaches resulted in superior clinical results. This two year study found similar improvements in the 1-legged hop test, square hop test, Lysholm knee scoring scale, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis and Outcome Score, and the Tegner activity scale. Knee laxity and range of motion decreased comparably in both groups, and a normal pivot-shift test was display in 67% of the single-bundle patients and 79% of the double bundle patients. Overall, the results of this study portray these procedures as equivalent in the treatment of ACL injuries.
