Intravenous vs Intra-Articular Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized, Double-Blind Trial

J Arthroplasty. 2017 Jan;32(1):28-32

183 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to be administered either intraarticular tranexamic acid following the procedure, or intravenous tranexamic acid. Patients were assessed for haemoglobin drop on postoperative day 1 and 2, length of hospital stay, the incidence of transfusion, and the incidence of complications. Results demonstrated no significant difference between groups in Hb drop on POD1 or POD2, or in length of hospital stay. No transfusion was required in either group. Deep vein thrombosis was documented in three patients in the IA TXA group and two patients in the IV TXA groups.
