Efficacy Comparison of Hyaluronic Acid and Corticosteroid Injection in Treatment of Trigger Digits: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Fifty-one patients (66 digits) with trigger finger were randomized to receive an ultrasound-guided injection of low-molecular weight Hyaluronic acid (HA) or a corticosteroid (CS; triamcinolone acetate). The outcomes of interest included Quinnell grade, pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, and the incidence of complications. Outcomes were measured at 1, 3, and 6 months follow-up. The results revealed that the Quinnell grading statistically significantly improved in the corticosteroid group compared to the HA group at 1month follow-up (p< 0.001), but no difference was observed at 3 and 6 months (p=0.080, p=0.508; respectively). Furthermore, the median VAS pain score was statistically significantly lower in the corticosteroid group compared to the HA group at both 1 month (p=0.025) and 3 month (p=0.003) follow-up. Median DASH scores also demonstrated a similar trend, with a statistically significant improved score in the corticosteroid group compared to the HA group at 1 month (p=0.01) follow up, but not at 3 and 6 months follow up (p>0.05). No major complications were observed.
