PROSTHETIC REPLACEMENT IS BETTER THAN OSTEOSYNTHESIS IN INTERTROCHANTERIC FRACTURE FEMUR IN THE ELDERLY: A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMISED BLINDED STUDY
61 elderly patients with an intertrochanteric fracture were randomized to treatment with either bipolar hemiarthroplasty or intramedullary proximal femoral nail fixation. Patients were assessed for perioperative outcomes, as well as postoperative outcomes to 24-week follow-up. Perioperative outcomes demonstrated significantly shorter operative times and lengths of hospital stay in the bipolar hemiarthroplasty group compared to the proximal femoral nail group. For postoperative outcome, Harris Hip Scores were significantly greater in the bipolar hemiarthroplasty group compared to the proximal femoral nail group throughout 24-week follow-up.
