OSTEOARTHRITIS
2026 SICOT Annual Meeting: Do growth factor injections outperform hyaluronic acid in knee osteoarthritis? A meta-analysis of RCTs
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
Epub Ahead of Print
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) and plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) injections. Pooled outcomes included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) total score and its pain, stiffness, and function subscales at 4 to 6 months. PRGF demonstrated significantly greater improvement in WOMAC function scores compared with HA, while differences in overall WOMAC, pain, and stiffness scores were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that PRGF may provide modest short-term functional benefits over HA without substantially improving overall symptoms.
