Short vs. long intramedullary nail systems in trochanteric fractures: A randomized prospective single center study.
Exp Ther Med. 2022 Jan;23(1): 106.Sixty-one patients with unstable intertrochanteric fractures (53 included in analysis) were randomized to receive surgical fixation using a short intramedullary nail or a long intramedullary nail. Outcomes of interest include the Harris Hip Score, Functional Ambulation Category scale, pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and surgical outcomes, measured up to 12 months post-operation. Results of the study found that the use of a long intramedullary nail was associated with longer operative time and more blood loss, with no differences in ambulation or function at 12 months post-operation vs. short intramedullary nailing.
