Shared Decision-Making Tool for Opioid Prescribing After Ambulatory Orthopedic Surgery in Veterans: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Sixty patients undergoing surgery for common hand conditions such as carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, or ganglion cyst excision, were randomized to either the shared-decision-making group (n=30) or standard care (n=30). Primary outcomes measured were pain interference and intensity using the patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS-IS) at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. Opioid use was also assessed each week for 4 weeks. Opioid use was similar between the two groups at all time points. Pain interference was significantly lower in the shared-tool group at 2 weeks compared to standard care.
