Validation of a sham comparator for thoracic spinal manipulation in patients with shoulder pain

OE Journal. 2015;3(13):16 Man Ther. 2015 Feb;20(1):171-5.56 patients experiencing shoulder pain due to subacromial impingement syndrome were randomized to receive thoracic spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) or a sham comparator. The purpose of the study was to determine if a predetermined protocol was a plausible sham for SMT in this population. The study found that patient belief of receiving the active treatment and perception of beneficial effects was comparable between the sham manipulation and manipulation groups, providing evidence to the validity of the sham protocol as an adequate sham comparator.
