The effect of a sequential compression device on hemodynamics in arthroscopic shoulder surgery using beach-chair position

50 healthy patients scheduled for elective shoulder arthroscopy under general anaesthesia were randomized to use or no use of a sequential compression device (SCD). SCD was observed to significantly reduce the incidence of hypotension and improve haemodynamic parameters, such as BP, Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP), Stoke Volume Index (SVI) and Cardiac Index (CI) in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery using the beach-chair position at 70 degree inclinaton, hence preventing intra-operative hypotensive episodes requiring correction.
