Self-Administered Acupressure for Probable Knee Osteoarthritis in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
JAMA Netw Open. 2024 01-Apr;():. 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.5830Three hundred fourteen patients with probable knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive self-administered acupressure (SAA) with knee health education (n=157) or knee health education only (KHE) (n=157). The primary outcome of interest was pain reduction measured on the numerical rating scale (NRS). Secondary outcomes included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, Short Form 6 Dimensions (SF-6D) quality-of-life scores, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and Fast Gait Speed test. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12. Overall, the results showed that the SAA group had a significantly greater reduction in NRS pain score than the KHE group at week 12. Additionally, quality-of-life scores improved more in the SAA group by week 12.
