Selenium for preventing Kashin-Beck osteoarthropathy in children: A meta-analysis
Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2009 Feb;17(2):144-51. Epub 2008 Aug 8This meta-analysis included 15 studies (5 RCTs and 10 prospective non-RCTs) that compared selenium supplementation to either a placebo or no treatment, in the prevention of Kashin-Beck Disease (KBD). A total of 2216 participants were identified from these studies. The results from this analysis indicated that selenium supplementation was effective in preventing Kashin-Beck Disease (KBD) in children. However, it is important to note that the benefits described in this analysis may be limited due to possible bias and confounders resulting from the low-quality studies included.
