Sealing of the intramedullar femoral canal in a TKA does not reduce postoperative blood loss: A randomized prospective study

OE Journal. 2014;2(19):12 Knee. 2014 Aug;21(4):853-7201 patients, diagnosed with degenerative arthritis of the knee, who underwent total knee arthroplasty were randomly allocated to 3 groups; A) bone graft sealing of the femoral canal, B) cement sealing and C) leaving the canal unsealed. The purpose of this study was to determine if sealing of the femoral canal was associated with reduced postoperative blood loss and transfusion rate in total knee arthroplasty. No significant differences were observed between the groups with regards to blood loss, hemoglobin level decreases and blood transfusion rates.
