Single-Injection Femoral and Sciatic Nerve Blocks for Pain Control After Total Knee Arthroplasty

88 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to either receive a femoral nerve block or a sham-block treatment. 31 patients in this study were consecutively randomized to a group receiving both sciatic and femoral nerve blocks. This study assessed the efficacy of peripheral nerve blocks in analgesia following TKA. The results from this study indicated that both the combination nerve block and the femoral nerve block produced significant reduction in pain scores and morphine use, with the greatest reduction observed in the combination sciatic and femoral nerve blockade.
