Effects of scapular treatment on chronic neck pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
BMC Musculoskelet Disord . 2024 Apr 1;25(1):252.Eight randomized controlled trials including 313 patients with chronic neck pain were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing scapular treatment vs. no intervention. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain intensity, neck disability, pressure pain threshold, cervical range of motion, electromyographic activity of neck muscles, and head forward posture. The pooled results showed that scapular treatment significantly improved pain intensity, especially in women, but had no significant effect on neck disability or pressure pain threshold. The main findings suggest that scapular treatment can reduce pain intensity in chronic neck pain patients, particularly in females, but its effects on other outcomes remain uncertain.
