Overall, the use of ORC showed no benefits in improving perioperative outcomes compared to the standard of care, except for significantly minimizing total and hidden blood loss. The results of this trial were limited by a small sample size, single-center design, and lack of assessment of postoperative outcomes such as function. Additionally, this trial did not compare ORC against tranexamic acid, which is a common hemostatic agent used in surgery.

70 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty for end-stage knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC; n=35) or standard of care (n=35). The primary outcomes of interest included total blood loss, decrease in hemoglobin, intraoperative blood loss, and hidden blood loss. The secondary outcomes of interest included operative time, serum D-Dimer, levels of fibrin degradation products (FDP), levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and the incidence of transfusion, deep vein thrombosis, intramuscular venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, wound complications, infection, and readmission. All outcomes were comparable between the two groups except for hidden and total blood loss which were significantly lower in the ORC group.
