Does Preoperative Rehabilitation Improve Patient- Based Outcomes in Persons Who Have Undergone Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Systematic Review

OE Journal. 2013;1(11):54 PM R. 2012 Oct;4(10):756-67. doi: 10.1016/j.pmrj.2012.06.005This systematic review identified 7 studies assessing the effects of a pre-operative rehabilitation program on the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Results indicated weak effect sizes for pre-operative rehabilitation on improvement of Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, range of motion and knee strength. However, there was a moderate effect size for length of stay in hospital, indicating that patients who received a pre-operative rehabilitation program had a shorter length of stay than the control group.
