A global adjustment rating scale was used to evaluate addiction treatment. Treatment with LSD significantly enhanced the probability of optimal adjustment but not necessarily overall improvement. Nonetheless, there were no statistically significant differences between groups on this scale. These findings illustrate that LSD, combined with inpatient residence may contribute to the rehabilitation of heroin addicts. More studies are needed as these findings are limited by the use of only one LSD administration. Additionally, a sociocultural rift was present between the white therapist and the sample of patients who were mostly black.

Seventy-eight volunteer heroin addict inmates underwent a controlled study to test the rehabilitative efficacy of brief residential psychedelic LSD psychotherapy. Subjects in the treatment condition received six weeks of psychedelic therapy (with one high-dose of LSD) and subjects in the control condition received weekly psychotherapy along with daily urine monitoring. More subjects in the treatment group maintained total abstinence or close to total abstinence for one year compared to the control group.
