Intra-articular remifentanil on postoperative pain in knee arthroscopic surgery; a double blind randomized clinical trial.

60 patients undergoing knee arthroscopy were randomized to receive either remifentanil (n=30) or saline control (n=30). The primary outcome of interest included pain at rest on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours. Secondary outcomes of interest included the incidence of rescue analgesia, time to first request for analgesic, rescue analgesia consumption, total meperidine use, and the incidence of adverse events. All outcomes were significantly better in the remifentanil group compared to the saline group at all time points. No adverse events were reported in either group.
