Primary stability of a short bone-conserving femoral stem

53 patients scheduled for cementless total hip arthroplasty were randomized to either a short- or conventional-length femoral stem. Patients were followed-up for femoral stem migration, periprosthetic bone mineral density, clinical outcome on the Oxford Hip Score, and incidence of revision over the first 2 years after surgery. Results demonstrated significantly reduced stem subsidence in the short stem group compared to conventional stem group. OHS at 2 years did not significantly differ between groups at 2 years, and one case of revision due to aseptic loosening was recorded (short stem group).
