Is deliberate hypotension a safe technique for orthopedic surgery?: a systematic review and meta-analysis of parallel randomized controlled trials

Thirty-one studies were included in this meta-analysis comparing deliberate hypotension vs. no deliberate hypotension for the reduction of blood loss and blood transfusion volume in orthopedic surgeries. The primary outcome of overall mortality was not pooled due to a lack of reporting in included studies. However, results revealed significantly lower pooled intra-operative blood loss and blood transfusion volume in the deliberate hypotension group compared to the control group. Sub-group analyses of the two outcomes by age, mean arterial pressure, type of surgery, treatment combination and drug class revealed similar results, in favour of the deliberate hypotension group.
