A comparison of spinal anesthesia characteristics following intrathecal bupivacaine or levobupivacaine in lumbar disc surgery

OE Journal. 2014;2(10):34 Eur Spine J. 2014 Mar;23(3):695-70060 patients undergoing surgery for single-level lumbar disc herniation were randomized to spinal anaesthesia using either bupivacaine or levobupivacaine. The purpose was to compare the two local anaesthetic solutions with respect to efficacy in sensory and motor blockade. Results indicated that recovery time from anaesthesia was significantly shorter with levobupivacaine, allowing for earlier mobilization postoperatively. Surgeon satisfaction with also higher when levobupivacaine was used.
