OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report

OE Journal. 2016;4(12):22 BMJ. 2016 Feb 3;352:i245

1635 sedentary adults between the ages of 70 and 89 were randomized to undergo either a moderate-intensity physical activity protocol or a health education program. This study was a continuation of the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) study which reported a significant reduction in mobility disability with the exercise program. The current study was published in ordered to report the outcomes of the study specific to the exercise programs ability to reduce serious fall-related injuries. Findings indicated a comparable number of serious injuries resulting from a fall in both groups. This finding was consistent regardless of age, sex, race/ethnicity, whether the patient experienced a fall within the past year, and short physical performance battery scores. However, a more pronounced effect of the physical program was observed in males as compared to females which may reduce the rate of fall-related fractures and hospital admissions.
