Pseudoarthrosis rates in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: a meta-analysis

Seventeen studies (12 RCTs, 5 prospective cohort studies) reporting pseudoarthrosis rates associated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the incidence of pseudoathrosis and various factors of ACDF by determining the rates of pseudoathrosis associated with the use of different types of bone grafts, the number of fused levels, follow up time, and study design. The results found allograft fusion material, longer follow-up times (>24 months) and RCTs to be associated with higher rates of pseudoarthrosis development when compared to autograft fusion material, shorter follow-up times (12-24 months) and prospective cohort studies, respectively.
